THE IMPORTANCE ROLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN SHAPING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF YOUNG NIGERIANS IN THE NATIONAL EFFORT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS

INTRODUCTION Higher Education is machine that redefines and reconfigure young mind towards being creative and innovative for societal development. From classical to contemporary times there have been argument and counter argument over the role of higher education in shaping the world and Nigeria in particular. However, history has shown that higher education played a vital role in national development when highly invested. However, the Nigerian higher education has vehemently played an important role through introduction of course such as entrepreneurship skills and independent research which broaden citizen’s horizon towards creativity and innovations that will save them from unemployment that have engulfed Nigerian society and overall national development. The independent creation and contribution which Nigerian higher education frequently propagate has led to invention and creativity by young Nigerians to build themselves and contribute their quota to national development even though is at slow rate. The development of most advanced countries came from the role of higher education in building creative citizens. Form the examples above; it has been proven that higher education play an essential role in shaping the contributions of young Nigerians towards development and progress. THE ARGUMENT When the education delivered is qualitative and in line with cultural environment, the citizen will produce knowledge that will lead to societal development proffering solution to pressing societal problem. Nigerian higher education though not doing enough allow students to embark on rigorous and independent research that broaden their mind towards problem solving which make them to develop effort towards development and progress of Nigeria. The Nigerian society is slowly developing because the quality of higher education is poor and the government is not using state power to harness intellectual capability. Even though the process is slow, “I Will start by saying; is better to have an unemployed literate’s society than to have an illiterate’s society that is employed.” When you have an employed literate society with higher education the development in such society will be rapid, the intellectuals in different fields will be articulating and contributing ideologically and technologically to national building. This is the case with most Nigerian youths that are employed in different institute proffering solution that has saved the organization from fall in production. A good example is; Dr Ola Orekunrin a 28 year old who founded flying doctor in Nigeria. A charity air operated emergency medical organization which is first indigenous air ambulance in Nigeria, based in Lagos. These young Nigerians brought innovation to the Nigerian market through E-commerce, their contributions made Nigeria to have E-commerce platform such as bellanaija, Jumia. Young and highly educated citizens of Nigerian are contributing in different ways in national development. When higher education adequately nurtured a citizen, such educated citizen will have a high drive towards personal growth especially when unemployed. Their drive for personal growth will lead to creation of establishment through entrepreneurial skills. Examples are; Uche Pedro 32 year old Nigerian entrepreneur who is the founder of bellanaija, fashion and lifestyle website. She is now one of the most popular blogger in Nigeria. Elizabeth Kperrun is a young Nigerian born TECPRENUER and fashion designer who developed Afrotalez, a mobile application, Eseoghene Odiete founder/creative director, Hesey specialized in creating customized apparel and accessories design for women, bags, shoes and slippers all inspired by African culture. Damilola Solesi is a 26 year old Nigerian entrepreneur who owns Amids animation studios based in Lagos and creates 3D computer animation, 3D content production and motion graphic. Oyin Damola, honey founder and CEO of fashpa.com a Nigerian E-commerce site that sells international fashion and lifestyles brands. The intellectual capacity of these citizens with higher education to solve their problem led to creative thinking and innovation which later benefited the society as a whole. Examples are; Saheed Adepoju, the inventor of INYE 1 and 2 tablet computers designed for African market and co-founder of Encipher limited, a Nigerian based technology company that introduced first android power tablet in 2010. Seyi Oyesola, Inventor of compact or hospital in the box. A solar power lifesaving operation room, which can be transferred to remote areas of Africa and set up within a minute. He graduated from UNILAG .Jelani designer of General motors brand and Chevrolet, a Graduate of architecture from University of Kebbi. Ndubisi Ekekwe. The inventor of microchips used in minimal and invasive surgical robots. Founder of first semiconductor and microelectronics limited, who was part of those that created XL sensor inside IPHONE and IPAD. When higher education highly nurtured an individual such an individual is likely to save a group or community or society from poverty of idea or from danger that might consume it, and this is what Nigerian higher education is effortless doing. The mastering of field of study will enable such individual to proffer a solution to an emerging problem in a society in which he belongs which can proceed to development. Societies are largely built by the quality of educated citizens it higher education produces; most western society became technologically and scientifically developed because of high quality education. Even though, the role of higher education is not good enough, it has played and is playing a vital role of in shaping the contribution of young Nigerians in the national effort for development and progress. Its effort towards in nurturing young citizens towards making effort to development and progress of Nigeria cannot be over look.
